Interviewing Kim Soo-ji

Kim Su-ji (37, Heungkuk Life Insurance) wore the captain's armband in the 20th season of the women's professional volleyball V-League.

It's amazing that she's been a professional player for 20 years, but Kim Soo-ji is still playing as one of the league's top middle blockers.

Heungkuk Life Insurance manager Marcello Abondanzá appointed Kim Su-ji as the team's captain for the 2024-2025 season, giving her a greater sense of responsibility.

Kim Soo-ji, who met with the joint reporting team in Shanghai, China on the 27th while Heungkuk Life Insurance was conducting spring training, recalled, "When I graduated from high school, I never thought I would play as a professional for 20 years." She continued, "When I debuted, the senior players who had been playing for a really long time were in their early 30s, and most retired in their mid to late 20s."

The secret to long-term success is thorough management.

Kim Soo-ji played more than 20 games in every season except for 18 games in her debut season of 2005-2006.

Since the 2011-2012 season, he has played more than 30 games except for 2016-2017 (29 games) and 2019-2020 (25 games).

Kim Soo-ji said, "I don't do any other excessive activities besides volleyball. When I play volleyball, my body is supposed to be playing volleyball, so I think that's why I take good care of myself," and laughed, saying, "When I'm resting during the off-season, I sit down with my friends or lie down when I'm alone."

He continued, "I also try to manage my weight. I tend to gain weight when I eat, so I have to manage it." He added, "I'm sensitive to changes in my weight, so if I feel like I've gained a little, I eat less."

Kim Su-ji, the oldest member of the team, was unusually appointed as the 'oldest member captain.'

Kim Soo-ji explained, "Director Abondanza said, 'I want you to do it now. If there's a better way, bring it to me,' but the very next day he said, 'There isn't any now, right? ' So I said okay and that I would take on the role of captain."

He said, "There are times when I have to be the captain and say the harsh things. I'm glad that I have (my friend) Kim Yeon-kyung by my side to share the burden." He added, "The position of captain is burdensome, but because of Yeon-kyung, it feels a little lighter than when I was captain when I was much younger."

Lee Ju-ah, who was in charge of Heungkuk Life Insurance's central team together with Kim Su-ji last season, transferred to IBK Industrial Bank of Korea.

Kim Soo-ji said, "Four middle blockers, including Huang Rui-lei, Byun Ji-soo, and Lim Hye-rim, from the Asian quarter, are training and competing equally," and praised her teammates, saying, "Huang Rui-lei is 스포츠 good at high ball handling and blocking because of his height (196 cm). Ji-soo understands the coach's instructions quickly and has good movement. Hye-rim is good at actively learning. That's why she will become an even better player in the future."

Coach Abondanza plans to increase the offensive role of middle blockers.

Kim Soo-ji said, "Even during training, the coach intentionally encourages middle blocker attacks. It's good if we score, but even if we don't score, we have to try a lot to score, so I think it's very positive." She added, "The middle blocker's attack ratio has to increase in order to break through the side, so we'll attack more in the coming season."
